How NAPLAN Scoring Works (ACARA 4 Proficiency Levels)

In 2023, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) retired the legacy 10-band reporting scale and introduced 4 clearer Proficiency Standards across all Australian states and territories:

1. ExceedingThe student’s results show advanced understanding significantly higher than the expectations for their year level.
2. StrongThe student’s results show they meet challenging curriculum expectations for their year level with confidence.
3. DevelopingThe student is approaching year-level expectations. Targeted practice helps close specific concept gaps.
4. Needs Additional SupportThe student’s results indicate they are below expected national standards and will benefit from explicit teacher/parent support.
