The International Academic Benchmark

Administered by UNSW Global (now Janison Assessments), the annual ICAS Writing competition tests students across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and over twenty other nations. Unlike standard school reports that indicate whether a child is meeting baseline curriculum standards, ICAS measures academic distinction among already high-achieving peer groups.

For ambitious families, an ICAS High Distinction or UNSW Medal represents tangible proof that a student has mastered advanced written expression at a national level.

The Official 6 ICAS Criteria Framework

Many coaching centres mistakenly prepare children for ICAS using the standard 10-criteria NAPLAN rubric. However, ICAS Writing markers operate under an independent 6-criteria assessment framework, where each criterion carries up to 8 marks (for a total of 48 scaled marks):

1. Genre (0 to 8 Marks)

How effectively the submission embraces the designated genre (e.g. persuasive essay, narrative, recount). Assesses audience engagement, tone consistency, and creative flair.

2. Text Structure (0 to 8 Marks)

The deliberate staging and organisation of ideas. Evaluates opening hooks, logical transitions, paragraphing discipline, and a satisfying conclusion.

3. Grammar & Syntax (0 to 8 Marks)

Grammatical accuracy and syntactic variety. High Distinction writers master compound-complex clauses, passive vs active shifts, and rhythmic variety.

4. Vocabulary (0 to 8 Marks)

Range, precision, and stylistic sophistication of vocabulary. Assesses whether multisyllabic or evocative words enhance meaning rather than feeling forced.

5. Punctuation (0 to 8 Marks)

Correct usage of basic punctuation (full stops, capitals) and advanced punctuation (colons, semicolons, parenthetical dashes, dialogue formatting).

6. Spelling (0 to 8 Marks)

Accuracy across simple everyday words, phonetically irregular terms, and challenging multisyllabic academic or descriptive vocabulary.

How ICAS Award Tiers Work

ICAS results are reported as percentile ranks compared with all students in the same year level who sat the test across Australia:

  • UNSW Medal: Awarded to the single top-scoring student in each state or territory.
  • High Distinction (HD): Awarded to students scoring in the Top 1% of test takers.
  • Distinction (D): Awarded to the next 10% (90th to 99th percentile).
  • Credit (C): Awarded to the next 25% (65th to 89th percentile).
  • Merit (M): Awarded to the next 10% (55th to 64th percentile).
  • Participation: Awarded to all other participating students.

What High Distinction Assessors Look For

The differentiator in ICAS Writing is calculated creative risk-taking. In standard classroom rubrics, a student who writes a safe, predictable narrative with correct spelling often scores near full marks. In ICAS, safe writing receives a Credit.

To cross into Distinction and High Distinction territory, markers look for:

  1. Subtext and Imagery: Showing character emotions through physical actions and setting details rather than explicit statements.
  2. Syntactic Control: Pairing a long, descriptive periodic sentence with a punchy three-word clause to create dramatic pacing.
  3. Thematic Unity: Ending the piece with a subtle echo of the opening image, creating a complete circular resonance.
